Thermal fluctuations in metastable fluids

چکیده

In this work, the thermal fluctuations of fluid in metastable conditions have been theoretically investigated. The is described with a diffuse interface approach based on Van der Waals squared-gradient theory (SGT), where free energy augmented by density square gradient term to take into account capillary effects. By averaging physical observables coarse-graining cells, it found that capillarity strongly modifies fluctuation statistics when increasing metastability. A remarkable difference respect simple description also detected approaching nanoscopic scales. Peculiarly, near spinodal loci, classical envisages divergent behavior intensity, while SGT provides finite variance field. scaling lines analytically derived and discussed. Finally, correlation length system identified for different metastabilities. Also latter case, critical exponents are calculated. theoretical results corroborated Landau–Lifshitz–Navier–Stokes fluctuating hydrodynamics simulations.

Dynamical signatures of freezing: stable fluids, metastable fluids, and crystals.

Mean squared displacements and velocity auto correlation functions are calculated using molecular dynamics for hard spheres under a range of conditions (i) for the equilibrium fluid below freezing; (ii) for the metastable fluid above freezing; and (iii) for the hard sphere crystal, both in the metastable region between freezing and melting, and in the stable region above melting. In addition, s...

Nonlinear viscoelasticity of metastable complex fluids

– Many metastable complex fluids such as colloidal glasses and gels show distinct nonlinear viscoelasticity with increasing oscillatory-strain amplitude; the storage modulus decreases monotonically as the strain amplitude increases whereas the loss modulus has a distinct peak before it decreases at larger strains. We present a qualitative argument to explain this ubiquitous behavior and use mod...

Fluctuations in fluids in thermal nonequilibrium states below the convective Rayleigh-Bénard instability

Starting from the linearized fluctuating Boussinesq equations we derive an expression for the structure factor of fluids in stationary convection-free thermal nonequilibrium states, taking into account both gravity and finite-size effects. It is demonstrated how the combined effects of gravity and finite size causes the structure factor to go through a maximum value as a function of the wave nu...

Modelling thermal fluctuations in non-ideal fluids with the lattice Boltzmann method.

Recently, we proposed a theoretical framework to include thermal fluctuations into the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for non-ideal fluids. Here, we apply a variant thereof to a certain class of force-based non-ideal fluid LB models. We find that ideal-gas-like noise is an exact result of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the hydrodynamic regime. It is shown that satisfactory equilibration ...
